There are plenty of indy shops out there.More than the staff here at MS&S would care to count. Most are just average run of the mill, parts, service and repair shops. Working hard to make a living and survive in today’s economy. Most never even become a blip on the radar.
Well not so for Psykotic Cykles in Peoria, AZ. Even the name stands out. We recently came across some of owner’s Joe Ciappi’s work at Westgate’s bike nite in Glendale AZ. So we decided to see what else our psykotic shop owner had to offer. The shop itself is located in an commercial area not far from Westgate City Center and the stadium. We arrived just before ten in the morning and were ready to see what Joe and his shop had to show us.
Joe told us that he migrated out here from North Jersey back in 1997. He had been working as a diesel mechanic for Rollins Trucking and working on bikes on the side. One day he decided he had enough of being a diesel mechanic and wanted to pursue bikes full time.
So Joe packed his bags and headed west. As soon as Joe got to AZ he enrolled in MMI. After graduating from MMI he spent time working for some of the local shops and dealers until 2002, when he deiced to go it on his own. Now Joe tells us he’s a guy who likes to have a plan. Joe you see wanted to make sure he did not over burden himself financially, so he first started working from his house until he established an acceptable customer base.
By 2005 Joe was ready to move into his own facility and out of the house. His first shop was located on N 91st ave. in Peoria. Joe said that he was at that location for about four and a half years. Joe’s now been in his current 20,000 sq. ft location for just under and year. Joe shares the new location with Moe Madrid’s custom paint shop, Bad Boy Designs. Bad Boy produces all the custom paint that can be found on Joe’s bikes.
Now Joe is happy to say that he will work on anything that comes through the door but does admit that the majority of his work is Sport-bike / Japanese related.
Now we asked Joe what bike brand he likes the best. Joe told us that he is a Yamaha man. He just loves his R1’s. So much so Joe told us that his bikes always come first. He let us know that nothing de-stresses him more than a ride on his Yamaha R1.
Psykotic Cykles in conjunction with Bad Boy Designs try to produce about thirty or so custom bikes a year. Most of which are commissioned by customers.
A lot of Joe’s creations are comic book themed. Joe is a big comic book guy. He loves to collect comic books and has over a thousand in his collection. Most he admits he has not even read because he does not want to decrease their value.
Joe has done custom bikes themes for customers, ranging from a GI Joe, to Terminator Salvation, X-Men Wolverine, The NY Giants, and currently has a ThunderCats bike in production.
Joe likes to create bikes that are unique. He told us that no bike he builds is exactly the same. He likes to always make sure that there is a variation in each bike he produces. Right down to the exhaust systems that he fabricates in house.
These bikes are not just cosmetic either. They receive some serous upgrades and mods. From extended swing arms, front fork mods, frame modifications, Lowering kits, brake mods, big bore kits, to stroker kits and cams. Joe will do what ever it takes to provide his customers with what ever he or she desires.
We spent some good quality time with Joe at his shop and we were impressed with his perspective on his chosen profession. We would also like to mention that Joe is not one of those guys who builds a bike just to end up parking it more than riding it. Joe is as serious about riding his bikes as he is his business. Joe’s personal bike, a 2000 R1 has over 207,000 miles on it. Thats right, I said 207,000 miles. Now thats a man who is serious about riding.
So to sum up our impression of Psykotic Cykles, Joe and Moe Madrid’s Bad Boy Designs. We would say it is a perfect blend of East Coast attitude and perspective, topped off with an infusion of west coast creative influence from a very talented design studio, that together produce some of the most unique and bad ass bikes that we have come across to date.
